Nurture learners' confidence

Besides language, LESLLA learners have to learn how to learn in a Western classroom. It can be discouraging when learning is impeded just because they do not know school skills well enough. Teachers may help learners become confident learners by teaching and showing them how to learn or review. Teachers may

  • establish routines and post agenda and learning objectives: This is to reduce learners' anxiety about schooling and also to prepare them well so that they can get more out of classroom activities.

  • encourage extensive reading, or reading for pleasure: Learners need a lot of pleasant reading experiences to be confident readers and learners.

  • offer learners more time for practice: Teachers may consider spending one-half or two-thirds of each lesson on reviewing with learners.

  • help learners see their strengths and reflect upon their learning (Parrish, 2004, p.267): This is necessary for them to see what they can do as learners and to not just focus on what the teacher can do for them and become too passive for their learning.
